The Vintage Harvest
The Forbidden Fruit of the Garden: Step back into the late 1800s when tomatoes were still whispered about as "Love-Apples." This stunning collection by Ernst Benary captures the bold, saturated reds and deep oranges that made these once-ornamental plants a sensation in the Victorian kitchen.
Curatorial Notes : Ernst Benary (1819–1893) established his seed company in Erfurt, Germany, which became a global hub for horticulture. Unlike many contemporary catalogs that used generic sketches, Benary’s Album was unique for its scale and artistic ambition. He insisted on drawing the original specimens from his own nursery beds, ensuring that each "Love-Apple" variety—from the perfectly spherical to the deeply ribbed—was a faithful representation of the cultivars he painstakingly bred.
